To start us off, in September we had a lovely fall picnic at a local park, with many THN families attending this year. And I noticed a lot of new faces! How wonderful to see so many new young families starting their homeschooling journey. It was nice getting to know all the new members and their children.

And solely for the parents, we held a potluck breakfast in September at a local church hall. It was a great opportunity for new and old members to chat about parenting and homeschooling and everything in between.

And with September comes an abundant amount of children’s activities, like the local community centre homeschooling sport drop-in every Wednesday afternoon. There have been a slew of cool programs being organized by THN members, like horseback riding lessons, trips to local historic sites, drama lessons, book clubs, and hockey/skating afternoons.

We held our Halloween party last Friday. We had a great turn out! We held the event at a new venue for us, and I thought the space was great. There was a large stage that the kids loved to play on. There were two rooms: one with all the potluck food and the other was a rather large room where the kids played and parents sat around chatting. I set up a Halloween craft table with lots of colouring pages, mazes, word searches, etc. One member brought in a basket full of items to make magical wands, which the kids loved making. All the kids, and most of the adults, dressed up and we all had a good time.

Our Science Fair is coming up in November. Our fairs are quite informative, I definitely learn a thing or two (well…I actually learn more than that)! The kids work hard on their presentations, on things from the solar system to the life cycle of a tree to experiments on household cleaners. Anything goes! Whatever interests the children works! Hope to see you there!

Also in November we will be holding our potluck lunch and swim event at a local indoor pool and community centre. This event is a favourite with many of our members.

Have many fun fall days schooling your children!

THN began in the fall of 1996 as The Burlington Homeschool Network. Shauna Bennett and Heather Butler were looking for a group that would welcome families regardless of their style of homeschooling. During its second year, the group more than tripled in size. Presently, THN is a vibrant and dynamic group made up of families that learn, share, and socialize together through participation in activities and in our yahoo group.
